چکیده

Eighteen accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana were grown with low (N-) and high (N+) nitrogen supply. N uptake was monitored by feeding plants with 15N-enriched nutritive solution over 24 h. Biomass [fresh matter (FM) and dry matter (DM)], N concentration (N%), and 15N content were monitored and computed to determine the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and nitrogen uptake efficiency (NupE). NUE has been estimated as the ratio between biomass and N concentration (DM/N%) and NupE as the concentration of 15N in plants [microg (g(-1) DM)]. Accession traits were analysed to detect common and individual genotype features. The genetic variation in NUE at high N input was mainly explained by variation in N uptake. Even though plants managed N uptake and N metabolism differently under N+ and N-, NUE was similar in these two conditions, showing that NUE was exclusively genetically determined. Hierarchical classification revealed that the physiological classes arising were similar under N- and N+. Both wasteful and efficient genotypes were detected. Three extreme genotypes, Col-0, Bur-0, and Tsu-0, were noted. Bur-0 and Tsu-0 exhibited high NUE and large biomass. Col-0 showed the reverse: low NUE and low biomass. Bur-0 appeared poorly tolerant of a high N supply. The present data will facilitate the choice of Arabidopsis accessions as parents of recombinant inbred line populations suitable for the mapping of quantitiative trait loci related to NUE, NupE, and N storage capacity.

Study of genetic diversity in bread wheat germplasm using nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency characteristics

In order to evaluate the traits related to nitrogen utilization and to identify the superior genotypes, 33 bread wheat landraces along three check cultivars of Chamran and Koohdasht (from Iran) and Gobustan (from the Republic of Azerbaijan) were studied in simple lattice statistical design with two replications under two treatments of non-usage and application of 200 kg/ha ammonium nitrate fert...

Natural variation of the root morphological response to nitrate supply in Arabidopsis thaliana

Nitrogen fertilization increases crop yield but excessive nitrate use can be a major environmental problem due to soil leaching or greenhouse gas emission. Root traits have been seldom considered as selection criteria to improve Nitrogen Use Efficiency of crops, due to the difficulty of measuring root traits under field conditions. Nonetheless, learning about mechanisms of lateral root (LR) gro...

Yield and nitrogen leaching in maize field under different nitrogen rates and partial root drying irrigation

Irrigation water is limiting for crop production in arid and semi-arid areas. Furthermore, excess nitrogen (N) application is a source of groundwater contamination. Partial root drying irrigation (PRD) can be used as water saving technique and a controlling measure of groundwater N contamination. The objectives of this investigation were to evaluate the effect of ordinary furrow irrigation (OFI...

A Comparative Study of Ethylene Emanation upon Nitrogen Deficiency in Natural Accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana

An original approach to develop sustainable agriculture with less nitrogen fertilizer inputs is to tackle the cross-talk between nitrogen nutrition and plant growth regulators. In particular the gaseous hormone, ethylene, is a prime target for that purpose. The variation of ethylene production in natural accessions of the model species Arabidopsis thaliana was explored in response to the nitrat...

Constitutive and induced resistance to pathogens in Arabidopsis thaliana depends on nitrogen supply

Knowledge about the induced pathogen resistance of plants is rapidly increasing, but little information exists on its dependence on abiotic growing conditions. Arabidopsis thaliana plants that had been cultivated under different nitrogen regimes were treated with BION ® , a chemical resistance elicitor. The activities of three enzyme classes functionally involved in resistance (chitinase, chito...
